It's early October, and someone in your family has just said, "Let's all do Christmas together this year." Now you need a place with enough beds, a plan that works for grandparents and toddlers alike, and a sense of what is actually open. Christmas in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg is one of the easiest holiday trips to build around a big group, because the towns do most of the entertaining for you. Here is how to plan it.
When the lights and events run
Dates change a little each year, so use these as a planning guide and confirm them on the official event pages before you book anything that depends on them.
- Pigeon Forge Winterfest lights: Nov 6th, 2026 through Jan 31st, 2027.
- Gatlinburg Winter Magic: Nov 5th, 2026 through Feb 15th, 2027.
- Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas: Nov 6th, 2026 through Jan 3rd, 2027.
- Christmas at Dolly Parton's Stampede: Oct 28th, 2026 through Jan 2nd, 2027.
- Christmas Never Ends drive-thru light show: Nov 1st, 2026 through Jan 17th, 2027.
A few one-night events worth planning around:
- Winterfest kickoff, Nov 13th, 2026: Pigeon Forge switches on its six million lights at Patriot Park, with live music and a fireworks show to finish.
- Tree lighting at The Island, Nov 21st, 2026: the shopping and dining complex lights its tree and starts its own Winterfest season.
- Gatlinburg's Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade: an early December tradition through downtown Gatlinburg. Expect big crowds, so arrive early for a curbside spot.
- New Year's Eve: The Island in Pigeon Forge counts down with midnight fireworks, and Gatlinburg holds its own fireworks show and ball drop.
The lights are up for months, so you do not have to travel the week of Christmas to see them. Early December often gives you the same displays with a calmer pace.
Tips from regular visitors
People who come back to the Smokies every December give the same advice, again and again:
- Use Veterans Boulevard, not the Parkway. It runs parallel to the Parkway and is the quickest way to Dollywood, The Island and the outlet shops. Save the Parkway for the slow drive to see the lights.
- Go midweek, and go early in December. Monday through Thursday traffic is far lighter than on weekends, and the weeks before Christmas are calmer than Christmas week itself. The lights are the same either way.
- Park once in Gatlinburg. Downtown lots fill on busy days. Park early in a city lot or at the welcome center and use the trolley, rather than circling for a spot. Check the trolley schedule before you go, since winter routes and hours can change.
- Do Dollywood on a weekday. Holiday weekends are the park's busiest days. A weekday visit means shorter lines and an easier time keeping a big group together.
Seeing the Christmas lights in Pigeon Forge
The Parkway fills with lit displays during Winterfest, and the simplest way to see them is by car after dinner. With several families, split into two or three vehicles and agree on a meeting point at the end. Kids in pajamas with hot chocolate make the drive feel like part of the trip, not a chore.
If your group has a baby or a very sleepy toddler, a drive is the best option: nobody has to bundle up, and you can turn back whenever you want.
Dollywood's Christmas season
Dollywood decorates the whole park for the holidays, with lights, trees, shows and seasonal food. It is a different park at night, and it is usually busy on weekends. Our full Dollywood planning guide covers how to split a big group by age.
Because The Remington is about 5 minutes from the park, you can do a short afternoon visit, come back to warm up, and return for the lights. Check the park calendar for the days it is closed, since it is not open every day of the season.
A day in Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg's downtown is walkable and festive in winter, and it works well for a group because everyone can wander at their own speed. Our comparison of Pigeon Forge vs. Gatlinburg explains how the two towns feel different. For Christmas:
- Go in the morning, before the sidewalks fill.
- Pick a meeting spot in case phones die in the cold.
- Check the road status page for the national park roads before you head out, and keep a back-up plan.
Plan for cold, crowds and tired kids
Winter in the mountains can swing from mild afternoons to freezing nights, so pack layers for everyone, plus hats and gloves for the evening lights. Traffic on the Parkway is heaviest at dusk on weekends, so leave earlier than you think you need to, or eat at the house first and go out after the rush.
For a group this size, small habits help a lot:
- Give each adult a few kids to keep an eye on, so nobody assumes someone else has them.
- Take one vehicle per family unit, and agree on a spot to meet if you get separated.
- Keep one slow, quiet morning in the plan. Grandparents and toddlers both notice when every day is packed.
- Charge phones before you leave the house, since cold weather drains batteries faster.
Who this trip suits
Christmas here works best for multi-generation families who want holiday atmosphere without cooking a full holiday dinner for 20 people. It is also a good fit for friends' trips and extended-family reunions held between Christmas and New Year's. If anyone in your group dislikes crowds, plan the busiest outings for weekday evenings and keep weekends for the house.
Book the big things early
Christmas week is one of the busiest of the year. A few things to lock in first:
- Your home. Large vacation homes book first, and holiday weeks go earliest.
- Dinner shows and reservations. A table for the whole family is much easier to book in November than in December.
- Dollywood days. Decide which day the whole group goes, then plan the rest around it. See what to book ahead for more.
Making the house part of the holiday
The best Christmas trips leave room to stay in. Cook a big breakfast, open gifts together, and spend an evening by the fire pit.
Our granddaughter loved the pool! Enjoyed the fire pit area also!

A private indoor pool is a good rainy or freezing day plan for kids who have had enough of the cold.
A sample Christmas weekend
- Friday evening: arrive, unpack, order or cook an easy dinner at the house.
- Saturday morning: slow breakfast, then Gatlinburg downtown while it is quiet.
- Saturday afternoon: back to the house for naps and the pool.
- Saturday evening: Dollywood for the lights, or a drive along the Parkway.
- Sunday: late breakfast, a last look at the lights, and a relaxed drive home.
Frequently asked questions
When do the Christmas lights start in Pigeon Forge?
Winterfest lights shine from Nov 6th, 2026 through Jan 31st, 2027, and the official kickoff celebration with fireworks is Nov 13th at Patriot Park.
Is Dollywood open for Christmas?
Dollywood's Smoky Mountain Christmas runs Nov 6th through Jan 3rd, 2027, but it is not open every day. Check the park calendar for the days you plan to visit.
What's the best way to avoid traffic in Pigeon Forge at Christmas?
Go on weeknights, and use Veterans Boulevard, which runs parallel to the Parkway, to reach Dollywood and The Island. Weekend evenings on the Parkway are the slowest times of the season.
Do we need to see the lights in December?
No. The displays are up for weeks, so November and early December work just as well and are often less crowded.
Is a big vacation home better than hotel rooms at Christmas?
For two or more families traveling together, usually yes. You get a shared kitchen and living room for meals and gifts, and you do not have to coordinate across many rooms.
