Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg sit just a few miles apart at the edge of the Smokies, but they feel very different. Pigeon Forge is spread out along a busy main road lined with attractions, shows and restaurants. Gatlinburg is a compact mountain town at the national park's entrance, best explored on foot. Most families do both. Here's how they compare.
Pigeon Forge: big attractions and shows
Pigeon Forge is the area's entertainment hub, and it's about 5 minutes from The Remington.
- Dollywood and Dollywood's Splash Country water park. See our Dollywood guide.
- The Island in Pigeon Forge, a shopping and dining area with a giant observation wheel.
- Dinner shows, a Pigeon Forge tradition and an easy group outing. Book ahead on busy weekends.
- Museums and attractions along the Parkway, like the Titanic Museum and WonderWorks.
- Go-karts and mini golf everywhere.
Best for: families with kids, theme park days, rainy days, evening entertainment.
Gatlinburg: a walkable mountain town
Gatlinburg is about 20 minutes from The Remington, right at the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
- A walkable downtown full of shops, candy stores and restaurants.
- Anakeesta, a mountaintop park with views, bridges and activities.
- The Gatlinburg SkyLift and SkyBridge, for big views over town.
- Ober Mountain, with seasonal activities including winter skiing.
- Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, a great indoor option.
- The national park, minutes away. See our Smokies guide.
Best for: mountain views, walking around, combining with the national park.
Traffic and parking
Both towns get heavy traffic on summer, fall and holiday weekends.
- Go early. Mornings are much easier in both towns.
- In Gatlinburg, park once. Leave the car in a paid lot or garage and walk, or use the trolley.
- In Pigeon Forge, use back roads when you can. The main Parkway backs up on busy days. Staying close to everything, like The Remington, saves a lot of time in the car.
Which should you choose?
You don't have to choose. Most families spend:
- One or two days in Pigeon Forge for Dollywood and attractions
- One day in Gatlinburg for the town and mountain views
- One or two days in the national park for Cades Cove, easy hikes and scenic drives
Leave at least one afternoon with nothing planned. The indoor pool, stone grotto hot tub, fire pit and arcade loft at The Remington make downtime a highlight, not a gap.
The place was spotless and had really nice amenities from great linens, kitchen appliances and cookware.
