Broken Bow is a year-round destination, but each season feels like a different trip. Summer is all about the lake and the river. Fall brings color and cool nights by the fire. Winter is quiet and cozy, and spring is green and a little unpredictable. Here's how to pick the right time for your group, and how far ahead to book.
Summer: lake days and river floats
Summer is peak season. The lake is warm, the river is perfect for floating and wading, and every outfitter and attraction is open.
- Best for: families with school-age kids, lake and boating trips, river floats.
- Weather: hot and humid. Plan outdoor activities for mornings and evenings, and keep afternoons for the water or the cabin.
- Crowds: the busiest time of year, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.
- Book ahead: large cabins for summer weekends often book several months out. Book boat rentals and guided trips early too.
Fall: color, cool nights and fewer crowds
Fall is our favorite season in Broken Bow. The heat breaks, the hardwoods mixed in with the pines turn color, and evenings around the fire pit or in the hot tub are at their best.
- Best for: hiking, scenic drives, wineries and breweries, multi-family trips after school starts.
- Fall color: usually peaks from late October into mid November, depending on the year.
- Crowds: weekends stay busy, especially around Thanksgiving. Weekdays are much quieter.
- Good to know: the river is still great for fishing, but most people are done swimming by October.
What a stunning home! This was our first time to the area, and Megan's cabin was perfect for our group.

Winter: the cozy season
Winter is quiet in Broken Bow, which is exactly why some groups love it. It's cabin season: game rooms, hot tubs, long dinners and fires.
- Best for: family reunions and holiday gatherings that are more about being together than going out, and groups looking for better availability.
- Weather: mostly mild, with cold snaps and the occasional ice storm. Check the forecast before driving in.
- What's open: most restaurants, wineries and breweries stay open, but some outdoor attractions, like Hochatown Amusements, close for the winter.
- Holidays: Christmas and New Year's weeks book up early, especially for big cabins.
Both of our cabins are built for this season. The Nomi Lodge has a game loft, a retro arcade and a hot tub under the pines, and Moonshine Flats has an indoor fireplace, a patio fireplace and an eight-person hot tub.
Spring: green, fresh and a little unpredictable
Spring brings everything back to life. Trails are green, the river runs strong, and attractions reopen.
- Best for: hiking, spring break trips, and fishing.
- Weather: mild days, cool nights, and plenty of rain. Pack rain jackets and have a few indoor ideas ready. Our Hochatown guide has a list of rainy day options.
- Crowds: spring break weeks are busy. Other weekends are moderate.
- River safety: spring rains can raise the river quickly. Check conditions with an outfitter before floating.
How far ahead to book a large cabin
Large cabins are the first to book up, because there are far fewer of them. As a rule of thumb:
- Summer weekends and holidays: 3 to 6 months ahead.
- Fall weekends: 2 to 4 months ahead, more for Thanksgiving.
- Winter and spring weekdays: often a few weeks is enough.
