Asheville is one of the easiest places to bring a big group, because there's something for everyone within half an hour. The trick is not trying to do everything together. Here's a simple plan for a first long weekend.

Friday: settle in

Arrive, unpack, and keep the first night at the house. At The Donovan that means the hot tub and barrel sauna, the fire pit, and a movie in the private theater once the kids are in bed. Order takeout or do an easy group dinner, since everyone's tired from the drive.

Saturday: Biltmore or the mountains

This is the day to split up.

Meet back at the house for dinner. A long table, a full kitchen and an outdoor grill make cooking for 20 easy.

Sunday: downtown

Spend the morning downtown and in the River Arts District, where you can walk through working artist studios. If you want to eat out as a group, call ahead, since many popular downtown restaurants only take big tables with a reservation.

When to visit

October is peak leaf season and the busiest month, so book early. Spring brings Biltmore's gardens into bloom, and winter is quieter, with Biltmore's holiday season as a highlight.

The whole place was spotless and beautifully decorated. The beds were extremely comfortable.
